Scottsdale Police arrested David Hongquan Zhu, an ASU Department of Management and Entrepreneurship scholar, charging the professor with killing his wife, Susan Yijuan Yan.
According to Scottsdale Police Sgt. Allison Sempsis, Zhu was taken into custody at the shooting scene around 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 on North 128th Way.
The street in an exclusive neighborhood is south of Shea Boulevard near Fountain Hills in northeastern Scottsdale.
"Police responded to a home with reports of a shooting that had just occurred,” Sempsis said.
According to the police report, Zhu has a history of domestic violence and has made threats against others – as well as suicide threats.
The arrest report states Zhu called 911 after shooting his wife.
“While trying to describe how she was shot, the 911 operator introduced the term ‘accidental,’ and David Zhu agreed,” the report states.
Zhu’s two children, a 19-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son, were home before and during the shooting, according to the report.
The son fled over a back wall after his mother was shot “and began trying to get help from neighbors to call 911.”
Responding officers found two shotgun shells in the hallway next to the home’s master bedroom – and an unresponsive woman later identified as Zhu’s wife.
She had two “shotgun blast wounds” in her back.
The children told police of “frequent domestic violence between their parents over the years.”
The son and daughter both heard screams and gunfire.
“Neither child expressed any surprise that David had shot and killed their mother,” according to the report.
Zhu refused to talk to police about the crime. Zhu, 47, did tell police he worked for ASU for the last decade and lived at the Scottsdale house for seven years.
Real estate sites estimate the value of Zhu’s home on 128th Way at $2.2 million. It sold for half that in 2017.
The county assessor lists the home as being owned by the Zhu Family Living Trust.
The ASU website lists David Zhu as “Professor and Dean's Council Distinguished Scholar.”
ASU describes Zhu as a scholar and a leader.
“Zhu builds on social and psychological theories to examine strategic decision making of top executives and entrepreneurs, diversity in the upper echelons, innovation, corporate governance, and corporate strategy,” according to his ASU biography.”
“He also studies how the structure of networks affects leadership behavior, TMT diversity, and firms' competitive advantages.”
In addition to being published in numerous scholarly publications, “As the faculty director of W.P. Carey's DBA program in China, he has provided professional advice to many top executives around the world.
“His work has been featured in Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and BBC Future, among others.”
Zhu did undergraduate and graduate work at Nankai University in China before receiving a doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Zhu is being held in Maricopa County Jail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in Maricopa County Superior Court.
He faces charges of second-degree intentional murder and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
